How to stop your merchandise looking like greenwashing

Three mistakes turn an eco friendly promotional gift into the opposite: calling it eco without any facts behind it, choosing a green material for something nobody will use, and overproducing. Before you mention it on the card or in your sustainability report, ask for the composition and the certification stated by the manufacturer for each item, and communicate only what you can prove. A specific line such as «stainless steel bottle to replace plastic ones» is more convincing than a generic badge.

What makes a promotional product eco friendly?

Three things together: a recycled or certified material, a long useful life and minimal packaging. A product that only does the first and gets thrown away after a month is not sustainable, whatever the label says.

Is sustainable merchandise more expensive?

Per item, it usually costs a bit more than the conventional equivalent, especially in organic cotton and certified materials. Across a campaign, the gap narrows if you order only what you will hand out and choose items that last.

Which branding method is the most sustainable?

It depends on the use. Heavyweight cotton carries weight and lasts for years as a shopping bag; RPET is light, folds up and stays in a handbag. The least sustainable option is a flimsy bag that loses shape after the first use, whatever it is made from.

Is a bamboo pen more eco friendly than a metal one?

Not always. A metal pen that takes refills and is used for years can have less impact than a bamboo one that gets lost in a week. For large-volume giveaways, bamboo or recycled plastic; for a gift people keep, metal.
